No need for a jury when the sentence is planned

No gallows prepared, have to use what’s on hand

Accused of murder, of a policeman at that
Poor Thomas Gilyard, he never stood a chance
Pleading innocent, he was locked away
Then torn from his cell he was taken and hanged in the harsh light of day

Only twenty years old
Gone well before his time
Bigotry in the guise of justice, it’s a sad, sad story
Never to be made right

These days are different or so we are told
But I can’t help but wonder as I watch the daily news unfold
Trade the noose for a bullet, the present looks like the past
Another person gunned down simply because they were black

Yes all lives matter
When it’s not your life at stake
Repeating the cycle after one hundred and sixteen years
It’s too little too late
